Role: Interactive Creative Director

We’re entering a new era. One where truth isn’t subjective, but collective. Where radical transparency is uprooting how we interact, transact, and grow. Where together, as newly engaged communities, we’re finally able to solve problems we thought were just the cost of business.

And behind it all is blockchain.

We’re entering a new era. One where truth isn’t subjective, but collective. Where radical transparency is uprooting how we interact, transact, and grow. Where together, as newly engaged communities, we’re finally able to solve problems we thought were just the cost of business.

And behind it all is blockchain.

More than a new technology, it’s a whole new playing field. An open system that strips away the middle men, the extra hoops and the dotted lines. Creating shared certainty, advancing knowledge, and bringing coalitions together around a single view of truth.

Soon blockchain won’t just be one way of doing business, it will be the way. A way that transforms everything from the safety of our food to the ethics of our jewelry to the ease of buying a house. As a founder of this new era, IBM is leaning forward. Challenging the way we’ve always done things, by partnering with an open source community of founders and developers, so that together, we can do more than ever before—for people, industries, and the planet itself.

IBM Blockchain was founded by a group of 9 IBM colleagues and I, at Galvanize San Francisco on June 9th, 2015. I left my talented design team at Cloudant to help start this new business unit as the Interactive Creative Director. The unit started small and nimble, but has grown rapidly to 250+ as of August, 2017, making it the fastest growing business unit ever at IBM. Design started with myself and has grown to 13 in three locations (San Francisco, CA, Research Triangle Park, NC, Hursley, United Kingdom). Fortunately, I was able to transfer the majority of my old Cloudant Design Team to IBM Blockchain Design. All of the work below was done by my team, creative agencies, and myself from June 2015 to June 2017.

Built and Contributed to an Open Source Project called Hyperldger Project

IBM Blockchain product and services are built on top of two open source projects called Hyperledger Fabric and Hyperledger Composer. IBM initially contributed both to the Linux Foundation. Fabric and Composer both share three main principles that would allow blockchain for business:

IBM Ranked #1 Blockchain Technology Leader

IBM Ranked #1 Blockchain Technology Leader

According to the study by Juniper Research, this reflected IBM’s high-profile R&D engagement with initiatives such as Hyperledger and its extensive list of blockchain clients across an array of key verticals and use cases, including banking, manufacturing, asset tracking and the music industry.

Produced an Animation Story to Help Rally Developers and the Community to Build a Blockchain for Business

IBM proposed a V1 architecture to make the current Hyperledger Fabric V0.6 more scalable and effective for business. However, that proposal was very complicated and not everyone could understand what it entailed or how to get involved.

To help with gain alignment and build excitement within IBM and the open source community on the Hyperledger Fabric V1 architecture, the design team produced a two-minute video animation.

Designed and Developed a Toolset and Framework to Help Make Modeling and Building Blockchain Applications Easier

farm_animals-2_02

All “blockchain business networks” share certain elements – namely assets, participants, identities, transactions, and registries. With existing blockchain or distributed ledger technologies, it can be difficult for organizations to take a blockchain business use case and map these concepts into running code.

To help simplify the creation of Hyperledger Fabric blockchain applications, we created Hyperledger Composer as a new open-source application development framework. The tool aims at helping users to create blockchain applications based on Hyperledger Fabric without needing to know the low-level details involved in blockchain systems and networks.

Delivered a Complex Distributed Ledger Technology Product that Helps Businesses to Connect and Conduct Transactions

In the past, creating a blockchain network was a lot of manual, time-consuming work. We created IBM Blockchain Platform as a flexible software-as-a-service offering delivered via the IBM Cloud. It enables network members to quickly get started developing a blockchain environment in less than two minutes (instead of 10-20).  It greatly simplifies the developing, governing, and operating a network.
